Montreal singer-songwriter Camille Brown, aka Malade, dives headfirst into the messy emotional aftermath of a breakup on "Give Up," a new release that embraces anger while delivering it with an intriguing sense of mockery. The result is a breakup song that revels in its emotional highs and lows.
Brown wrote and produced "Give Up," with co-production from Damien Muller. The song deals with the bitterness that can arise when a relationship breaks down. The song has a post-breakup bitterness, but the emotional delivery adds a special twist to it. Malade treats heartbreak not with sincerity, but with a mocking edge, creating tension between the subject's seriousness and how it is expressed.
That contrast is one of the release's most compelling elements. "Give Up" is a ridiculously earnest breakup song, and that earnestness is part of its personality. Malaise's method leaves space for the song to explore the complicated emotions that sometimes follow the end of a relationship. Disbelief can co-exist with anger, disappointment, and emotional exhaustion, and "Give Up" is content to live in that messier space rather than trying to tidy it up.
Brown and Muller's collaboration provides a strong creative foundation for the release, with Brown writing and producing and Muller co-producing. Mala's "Give Up" is a pointed, expressive, knowingly dramatic take on post-breakup frustration. It's a release that takes the emotional chaos of heartbreak and gives it its own personality.
