Brighton electro-pop duo TYDL makes a striking first impression with their debut single "Ethereal," serving up a sound as mysterious and intoxicating as the title suggests. Vocalist Rebecca Valerie and drummer Jack Dunstall brings a fascinating sense of obsession, desire, and surrender to a song that explores the less controllable side of human nature. "Ethereal" looks at the impulses that may lie beneath the surface, the part of us that resists control and sometimes takes over completely.
Valerie and Dunstall wrote the title track, "Ethereal," and Lewis Amoroso produced it. It is about an imaginary love interest and the power of lust that takes over. The story slips into a slumberous mode, with someone so obsessed that they put the object of their obsession under a spell to keep them together forever.
"Ethereal" offers plenty of room for TYDL to find their identity. Ushering Valerie's vocals and Dunstall's drumming to the forefront, the track is a compelling first chapter for the Brighton pair; one shaped by fantasy, fixation, and the seductive freedom of embracing what can't always be controlled. Beneath the story of obsession and fantasy is a meditation on accepting the uncontrollable parts of ourselves and learning how to make them useful. Within the track's darker concept is a sense of empowerment our wildest instincts don't necessarily have to be subdued.
