John Oates, one-half of the legendary pop-rock duo Hall & Oates, reminds us through a powerful new single, "Disconnected," to do just that. Written and recorded in Nashville with producer/musician David Kalmusky at Addiction Sound Studios, the song marks a return to an introspective, emotionally honest sound for Oates.
The song dates back years to when Oates had an idea for a chorus he initially explored in folk tuning. The idea was premature back then; it had no well-defined emotional core. When the world went into lockdown during the covid era, his older sketches resurfaced, and so did this long-subdued thought. My inner contemplation in solitude gave rise to these lines.
"Disconnected" investigates the adaptable experience of feeling shut off from emotional, physical, and spiritual connections. The track is about those moments when someone is not only distant from others but also away from their own normalcy and security. However, beneath its contemplative sound, the song is tinged with a thread of defiance, reminding the listener that hope is always present and that their work to reconnect with what seems missing continues.
Recorded at Nashville's creative haven Addiction Sound Studios with the collaborative input of David Kalmusky, "Don't Shut Me Down" emerges as an introspective chapter in a storied career for Oates.
